FAQ

What is The Broken Family Band?

It's just some men doing some music is all. Steven sings and plays a guitar. Jay plays the guitar and sings a bit. Mickey plays the drums and percussion stuff. Gavin plays the bass guitar. Obviously they do other things as well. We are frequently joined by Timothy Victor, who plays a variety of instruments and is invaluable, but has no voting rights, and occasionally some other people.

What do the album titles mean?

The King Will Build A Disco: It's a stupid line in one of the songs on that record. We thought it sounded cute.

Cold Water Songs: The water 'at' the studio was cold, and we had to go outside to get it. Where it was cold.

Jesus Songs: Although we recorded some of it at Martin Green's house, it was felt innappropriate for us gentiles to allow him to play on it. He'll get his revenge. It was sort of a joke, but not entirely. If Christ is indeed the Son Of God, and God is Almighty, then he can take a ribbing from some pasty twats in a pop group. We suggest you have a go at all the neo-nazi bands springing up on myspace before you get worked up about this.

Welcome Home, Loser: Oh bugger. This title was genuinely inspired by a dream, wherein a friend returned home from 'following his heart' in New Zealand to a party with banners reading 'Welcome Home Loser'. He did come back, but he's doing fine.

Balls: Because it's a good name for a record. There's more to it, but it wasn't inspired by any cultural references, as has been suggested elsewhere.

Hello Love: It's meant to be said out loud in a 'chirpy' voice.

Who's in charge of this website?

i dunno.

What time are you on?

Do all bands hate this question as much as we do, or are we being irrational? Look, usually we're playing in venues that open around 7/8pm and close at 11pm/12am so its advisable to get to the venue between those times. If we're headlining you could get there later, if we're not then simply get to the venue early. Usually we try to play with people we like and would therefore recommend, so we'd advise seeing the whole show. Don’t ask us.

Can our band support your band?

No.

Can your band support our band?

Will it be fun?

Can we do a split single with your band?

Best to ask that one by text.

Why don't you tour more often?

We get out as much as we can. We've lasted this long because we do it the way that works best for us. We’re sorry that we can't get out more often though.

What jobs do you do when you’re not doing The Broken Family Band?

An article written by Steven Adams for The Guardian claimed that we variously work as marriage guidance counsellors, biscuit manufacturers and roller disco managers. In reality, one of us does manage a roller disco, but the rest are obviously fabricated.

Who are the other people you play with? I mean sometimes there's like, more of you, dude.

Timothy ‘Folk Orchestra’ Victor, Jen ‘Fuses’ Macro, Torsten ‘Larsen & Furious Jane’ Larsen, Gill ‘Folk Orchestra’ Sandell, Matt ‘Folk Orchestra’ Hutchinson, Martin ‘Lau’ Green, Inge ‘Harem Scarem, Karine Polwart’ Thomson, Owen ‘Magoo’ Turner, Stacy ‘Magoo’ Gow, Andrew ‘Magoo’ Rayner, Eddi Reader, Joe ‘Goldrush’ Bennett, Piney Gir, Sam ‘Be Good Tanyas’ Parton, Rob W. Jackson, Mary Epworth, Emily Barker, Daniel Lapp, Nick ‘Xadrez’ Wilsdon, Neman, and lord knows who else.
